Do’s and Don’ts after Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction can be an unpleasant experience, but it doesn’t have to be. If you take good care of yourself after the procedure, you can heal quickly and get back to your daily routine.

What Is a Tooth Extraction?

An extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. The most common reason for an extraction is because there has been damage to the supporting structures that hold a tooth in place, such as gum disease, decay, or injury to surrounding teeth. After a tooth extraction, it is important to follow several steps to aid healing.

Things to do

Icing

As soon as you get home after having your tooth extracted, a few things should be done to help the healing process. The first is the most obvious; ice it! This will help with swelling and soreness. Keep an ice pack on your jaw for 15-20 minutes every hour.

Clean Your Mouth

Another important thing that you should do after a tooth extraction is to clewan your mouth with a warm saltwater gargle at least thrice a day for two weeks. This helps remove any leftover blood, pus, or food particles that would cause infection and swelling. It also reduces the pain of post-extraction side effects.

Visiting the Dentist

Post-extraction dental appointments are an important step in your recovery. During your appointment, you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions about how to properly care for your gums and teeth.

Also, take pain medications as prescribed by your dentist on a timely basis.

Things not to do

After you’ve had a tooth extracted, there are several things you should do to help healing:

1. After the tooth extraction, it is very important to avoid smoking for some time. Smokers are at a higher risk of developing dry sockets, which can result in severe pain and infection.

2. Avoid eating solid foods for several days after the extraction. Solid foods are those that require chewing, such as sandwiches or raw vegetables. Your dentist will give you specific instructions on which foods are safe to eat.

3. Do not take aspirin after getting a tooth removed. Rather than help with the pain, it can make things much worse..
