Some Great Dental Hygiene Tips for Healthy Teeth

Dental hygiene is not just about going to the dentist every month; instead, it’s an everyday practice. A good daily dental routine will keep your and your family’s teeth healthy and mouth fresh. It will also prevent cavities and other oral diseases like gingivitis.

At Rapha Dental LLC, we know just how essential healthy teeth and gums are. So our dentists have shared some of their top dental hygiene tips for keeping your gums, teeth, and overall body healthy.

Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day

Brushing your teeth at least twice a day is important, preferably in the morning and before going to bed, to prevent cavities. What’s the science behind this? When one goes to sleep, their mouth dries out, and so does the saliva. Saliva prevents plaque buildup on our teeth. A dry mouth and no saliva means plaque buildup and cavities.

When you brush your teeth using fluoride toothpaste before bed, you effectively clean out the bacteria and plaque from your mouth. Even when you fall asleep, and the mouth dries up, your teeth and gums will not be adversely affected.

Floss At Least Once a Day

While your toothbrush can clean your whole mouth, including the tongue, there’re some areas or places where the toothbrush can’t reach, such as the tight space between the teeth. So, the only way to get out the food particles stuck in-between the teeth is by flossing. Flossing is crucial for keeping your teeth and gums healthy and preventing cavities.

Eat Healthily

What you put in your body is directly related to the health of your teeth and gums. There are quite a few snacks and foods that aren’t tooth-friendly, such as sticky toffees, chips, citrus fruits, raisins, and dried apricots. Citrus fruits contain citrus acid, and consuming these fruits in large quantities can be detrimental to your tooth enamel. In the same way, sticky foods tend to stick to your teeth for longer than everyday foods and may cause harmful bacteria. So in case you do eat sticky or citrusy foods, be sure to brush your teeth immediately afterward.

Improve Your Calcium Intake

Adequate amounts of calcium, Vitamin B, & D are vital for healthy teeth and gums. Apart from taking supplements, you can increase your calcium intake and vitamin D & E by consuming foods like milk, fortified foods, salmon, cod liver oil, cheese, yogurt, and broccoli.
